Well I haven't updated for a bit because I've been ill. Again. This time I managed to catch whatever James had the week before. This may or may not have been swine flu. I seem to have had it in a more concentrated form though. Whereas James had it for over a week I had all the symptoms possible in the space of two days. On Wednesday night I went to bed at 4pm and didn't get out again until 9am the next day having had a permanent headache. Then I had aching muscles, other flu type stuff and then I've been left with a cough that I still had. Rubbish. It meant that my family had to postpone their visit too which was very annoying.

On the Wednesday I went to bed James went to his last LGBT group in Skipton. There was a party and the insanely hyperactive gays from the Bradford group went to as did a few from the Scarborough one. He's not safe to let out alone honestly. As per usual he got a few phone numbers thrust at him (as long as that was the only thing thrust at him). It's shameless! Hilariously one of the Bradford group didn't go because they would have had to have gone straight from work and they didn't want james to see him in his work clothes! Also, Chris who I've met a few times apparently never stops talking about James! Brilliant. I have to say that although I never ever consider myself not good enough for James but when he came home and was telling me about gays fawning over him I did wonder why such a hot guy was with me instead. In my defense though, I wasn't at my best what with me being at death's door. I am very lucky though. I think James is a bit glad of the group finishing. He won't have to travel to Skipton anymore and there aren't always a lot of people there. It's a shame though, he's met some nice people through it.

On Monday my brother came to visit. We had a nice time. On Tuesday we both went to the Eurogamer Expo event at Clarance dock which had loads of games that are coming out for Xmas and talks and stuff on. Most of the games were playable and we got to try out some good stuff. I really want to be able to play the Uncharted games! Boo to that. The new one look stunning. I was talking about motion capture with james today and he said how it doesn't work for film but that game is a perfect example of where it does work. Mario Brothers for the Wii was also great, so much fun. We went to one of the talks - the one for Brink. It was mostly just a demo but the lead games designer was giving the talk and it was interesting to hear what went into the making of a game. It's crazy, there are so many people working on a game, it's just like a film.

To be honest, a lot of the stuff isn't that interesting to me. A lot of same-y FPS games and racing stuff which concentrate on realism as opposed to actual innovation. It especially showed in the over-18 sections that they had. the games there were the most boring! i do wonder if, while the technology of gaming increases, the rest of the gaming industry stays still. Storytelling certainly isn't getting better, nor is script writing. The only place that this is really pushed is in RPGs, especially Japanese games like Final Fantasy. It's for this reaosn that a lot of games just leave me behind. Don't get me wrong, I like playing games but I have to supplement some of my gaming needs with retro gaming, no bad thing. Anyway, moaning aside it was a good day and the tickets were only £6 each. They had a tonne of games there on two sites as well. I've never seen Clarance Dock so busy! jonather had a good day overall too and it was nice to see him.

We watched a few things over the past few days. 'Cockles and Muscles' was a French film which was funny. Apparently it got mixed reviews when it came out but I really enjoyed it, but then I like a lot of French films. I liked it's take of sexuality and humour and classic misunderstandings, a good film. We watched Abigail's Party last night. We've been meaning to watch it for ages after hearing so much about it, and it was very good. Very play like, but then it was a play. But it was all so subtley done and very funny. I really enjoyed it. The ending takes you by surprise though, and I do want to know what happens to Abigail!

I finished reading my QI book about animals. It was very interesting, obviously. I learnt a fair bit actually. I'm not sure what to read next although I have a few magazines and bits to catch up on so maybe I'll do that for a bit.

Today James booked the day off and we went for an unplanned visit to York. York really is lovely in the autumn and it's been ages since we went there. We had a potter around the shops and had our dinner by the river. It was surprisingly busy. I don't even think it was because it was half term, it was probably just because it was York. I bought a jumper from H+M and BBC Wildlife magazine and it comes with the photographer of the year photos which I always love. I don't think I bought much else!

Tonight we carved out a pumpkin. I'm very pleased with him, he's very cute. We haven't thought of a name for him yet though. I'll put a picture up when I load them on here. He's on the balcony and looks in when we have the blinds up, bless him. I actually really like Hallowe'en. Mostly because of the colours though, all dark blues and oranges, my favourite. I love autumn.

I have to mention how good the new Annie album is! I've waited for it for 18 months and it's finally out! A miracle. It's really good though. There's a bit more to it than Anniemal I think, and it's all fun pop stuff done extremely well. I seem to be the only person who likes the Breakfast Song :(

I've been wanting to update this thing for ages but work's been a bit hectic. Let's just say that I nearly had to break up a fight in a committee and the (lack of) performance of two members of senior management prove my earlier point about me being on a low wage. They're on four times as much as me and I could easily do their jobs better then. It makes me cry inside. No matter though, I've applied for an archive job today so we'll see how that goes.

Last Sunday we went to York. The weather wasn't great and we got there pretty late so there wasn't a lot to do. We sat in a coffee shop for a while and then had a wander by the river where we saw a lot of cute little baby geese. Then we went to the restaurant we always go to when we go to the Grand Opera house, Cafe Uno opposite, except that it's Bertollinis instead but the principle's the same. So we had some tasty Italian food and then we went across the road to see Ross Noble. The last time we saw him was about 18 months ago in the same place and he was brilliant as expected. Possibly better than last time. He even did jokes about Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' dance which was just perfect as I'm obsessed by the whole thing and I play the single on a daily basis (On a side note, it was incredibly difficult to get the single on CD. Here I am, wanting to give my money to the record making people and the fact that it was very difficult for me to do this does make you wonder about the whole industry). So yes, there were jokes about Beyonce having irritable bowel syndrome, Jay Z releasing pigs into the house, the stroke advert (Fetch A Sausage, Twice), rickets bolero, scanning your plums in the supermarket and Jesus putting together a desk from IKEA. Someone in the audience had made him a vegetarian scaring device like on his DVD; a hat with a moving piece of meat on it! So yeah, it was really fun. In more sad news, he'd had his house destroyed in the Australian bush fires which is awful but he seemed to take it good spirits somehow!

The other main thing we've done this week is going to Sheffield last night to see Saint Etienne perform all of Foxbase Alpha. Amusingly in the queue we were stood on front of two guys. They were clearly like us, someone who'd dragged his boyfriend to see them with him which amused me. Someone they were talking to mentioned Annie and one of them said to the other, 'you know Annie, well you'd know her if you heard her', which is exactly like something I'd say to James! Made me smile anyway. It was odd being back in Sheffield no matter how brief. I haven't been for a year but it's also odd how close we are to everything in Leeds. I certainly don't take it for granted.
Anyway, the setlist:

Foxbase Alpha:
This Is Radio Etienne
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Wilson
Carnt Sleep
Girl VII
Spring
She's The One
Stoned To Say The Least
Nothing Can Stop Us
Etienne Gonna Die
London Belongs to Me
Like The Swallow
Dilworth's Theme

Interval

Favourites:
This Is Tomorrow (Richard X Mix)
Who Do You Think You Are?
Burnt Out Car
Shower Scene
Like A Motorway
Sylvie
He's On The Phone

Foxbase Alpha is far from my favourite of theirs but it was a great show, I really enjoyed it. My only gripe (and I don't know whether this was because of where we were stood) was that music was so loud for certain songs (mostly the Favourites section) that it drowned out the vocals and I really thought that they were at their best when things were a bit more stripped down. Spring, Carnt Sleep anbd LIke The Swallow were especially good. They seemed to have the balance right for Who Do You Think You Are and beefing the sound up for Like A Motorway worked well but it didn't do Sylvie any favours. The best songs? 'Spring' (because it's a favourite of mine anyway), 'Nothing Can Stop Us' and 'He's On The Phone'. There were some great odd bits too. Sarah gave out sweets during 'Wilson' and her and Debsy were playing cards during another bit. Wonderful.

We're meant to be going to a barbecue tomorrow but as it's now thundering here it's not looking good. Oh, celebrity news. Girls Aloud are back in the hotel around the corner! And not only that, Jo from Spooks is staying in our building! james saw her the other day and she was on her phone saying how 'Spooks didn't need her for filming tomorrow', and lo and behold and saw her leaving the building yesterday, and we saw her on the way back in with loads of shopping so she'd clearly spent her day off well. I never see famous people so having had a lot around in such a short time is quite nice. In wonder if there's a spare flat higher up the building which is rented out to actors as Lenny Henry was here when he was in Othello a few months back.

Yesterday on my train to work we stopped just outside Leeds:

'I apologise for the delay. If you look at the right hand side of the train then you can see, what I assume is the cause of this delay'.

Everyone looks. Two brown cows trot past, seeming to be quite happy wandering about, having escaped from a near-by field. Oblivious to the chaos being caused they proceed to wander about the side of the track, eating exotic plants and revelling in their new-found freedom. A poor railway worker runs past, aided by a van who try and corner the cows away from the line. They disappear for a bit. The the cows are seen running the other way, it's like an episode of Scooby Doo. Thankfully, it wasn't long before the cows were lead away from the line and we were on our way. The joys of the country!

James' new car is now sat in our parking space. Hooray! It is lovely, although he can't drive it yet because it hasn't been taxed - but it looks nice! We've even sat in it, unable to go anywhere.

I'm going to send off the acceptance letter for my course today so I've been having a think about that. It starts on the 26th September. Now, a while ago James suggested that I could go part time and fit my course in around my current job. Naturally, because I'm stubborn I said 'No boyfriend! You are wrong!'. However, it's not such a bad idea. I'm aware that it's a crappy time to go even with two months notice because of the preparations for a big audit in November, plus David is on leave for all of August. Also, I'm been given a pay rise which I've (apparently) earned so I must be doing something right, and going part time would actually make my current wage approximately what it is right now, so I wouldn't feel a difference. Money is a big problem for fees and the like.

The problem is that with the re-structure my line manager now will not be my line manager when I'm due to go in September so I'm a bit stuck as to who to talk to. However, I have a probation review in a few weeks so I'll raise it at that. Has anyone negotiated going part time before? And if so, how did it work? I have to bear in mind that it's a two-year course so I have two years to gain library experience. And we were having a meeting about our new tean and I felt quite good about it, it seems like we can have quite a good effect on the College (mmmm power!) and I felt quite positive about    Plus we have a new Virtual Learning Environment which, if I get to work on, will be good library experience for me. So yeah, lots of positives to doing it that way. I just have to raise it. Eek! It makes sense in my mind but whether they'll go for it, I don't know.

James' grandparents came to see the house on Tuesday and it was a hit :D I wasn't there as they came during the day. It's my Grandma's 93rd birthday on Saturday so I'll have to give her a ring. I've got a card to send her anyway :)

I've just been talking to Liz and Eleanor about moving to York (as Liz lives there) and apparently house prices are not bad, due to student populations. Also, it's not as expensive as you'd think apparently. So it'd be nice to do that eventually.

I dunno what went wrong last week but it was mental! New Prime Minister, floods, Spice Girls, work stuff, being stranded at home, terrorism - crazy! So, not surprisingly, it was quite an eventful weekend too!

Saturday, me and James headed off to York. I do like York, and it's locality make it somewhere that I'd really like to live in the future. I wonder if York Minster has a library. Hmmm. Oddly, the weather was quite OK! We didn't want to stay over in case any floods stopped us from getting home but that was never a problem, although it was a little drizzly. We did a little shopping. I kinda wish we'd had more time for it really because it's been ages since I've been out shopping. I bought a nice shirt and a T-shirt, and the Klaxons album. We had lunch in Fenwick's too because we're dead posh.

At 2 o'clock we headed to the York Palace Theatre to see Beauty and the Beast. The verdict? No more matinees! We were in the stalls, near the back but with really good seats. But as the place filled up we became very aware of the amount of kids there. this awareness didn't stop during the performance either because the horrors were so damn noisey that we just couldn't stand it any more. At the interval James went and requested a move of seats it was so bad. Thankfully, the gallery was much quieter and there were even adults there wanting to enjoy the show, crazy as it seemed at the time. Cue moan about adults taking kids too young to appreciate it etc etc. So what of the show itself? Well, it was good, not great, but good. Sometimes it lapsed into pantomime a little and the upbeat numbers blew the ballads away. It was clear that so much effort had gone into the party pieces that the slow ones seemed a little flat and uneventful, plus the songs didn't always allow the clearly talented singers to show off their voices. Another problem was that we'd seen the Lion King which was so utterly amazing that this was always going to pale in comparison.

But, I think we're missing the thing that made the show - there was goddamn dancing cuttlery! It was amazing. 'Be Our Guest' was easily the best thing about the show and the costumes in general were amazing. Anything with a woman dressed as a giant toast rack was always going to be a winner. There was a corkscrew, sugar bowl, serviettes doing the can-can, TOAST RACK, knife, fork, spoon, plates, acrobatic cushion, salt and pepper pots, and many other things I can't remember. plus, Lumineres had actual flame-y hands which was very good. So yes, it wasn't all bad. Apart from the kids - they were ALL bad.

Finally, this weekend we put some shelves up, which should have been done earlier, but once they were up the final unpacking of books happened. So things are looking really good :D James also bought a car, which is rather good. It's a gold Citroen Saxo, five years old and it should be ready today :D We took it for a test drive and everything and it's such a smooth ride in comparison to the banger we have now! So yes, I'm pleased for him :D At some point I may even get insured on it. Crazy talk I know.

Sunday was also Sheep Day in Skipton. The high street was shut off which I always like and we had a wander around to see what was on offer. There were some stalls selling nice preserves so I bought a jar of tomato relish and a jar of tropical jam. Yum yum. There were also displays! We saw a sheep having a hair cut and a dog herding geese, oh and some ducks, including ducklings! All very good. A heavy downpour in the afternoon didn't help although before that the weather was good. We didn't hang around for too long anyway due to car buyage.

Doctor Who was finally watched. The final was excellent and I'm gutted that Martha is relocating! I like her a lot. I also like the Doctor being a weird little alien thing too. John Barrowman in chains too, me thinks that there was lots to like :D

Yesterday was staff day. Yes, a desperate attempt to boast morale was really fitting with the dissolving of the department. Some boring talks started the day off, including a guest speaking who was teaching us relaxation techniques. They just made me feel a bit dizzy :s but lunch was posh, nice and free and I sat talking to Debbie for most of that. I found out that James in the office is a gay (points for me!) during a discussion on sexuality in the office. I've been thinking about what was said a lot actually. Debbie's view was basically, we'd rather just people be honest with us, which immeadiately suggests that not saying anything is like lying to your collegues, which I totally disagree with. I don't really mind wanting to know, it's any digging that I don't like. Part of my issue comes from the fact that I myself find it difficult to express my sexuality to new people, I guess it's because before work I've never had to do it. I came out at uni when I already had established friends and so never really met new people who I had to say anything to. But the fact is, work collegues are just that, collegues, not friends and I think what you tell to whom is your business. I dunno, it's something that I've got to deal with. I'm just not the kind of person who doesn't give a shit what others think of them so just coming out with stuff concerning who I am I find a bit difficult sometimes.

Anyway, that aside the day was good. It was made better by the quiz at the end of the day which we won. And for once I felt like my old self, being able to just be me in a social environment. I didn't realise how much of that area of my life was missing really, although I don't really know what to do about it.

I appear to be obsessed with Darren Hayes at the moment. Not someone I thought I'd say that about but 'The Tension and the Spark' is a wonderful electro album. Can't wait for the new one. Mmmm, August.

Oh, I forgot! I ordered a PS2 last night! Hurrah! I've been thinking about gettting one for a while so I've finally taken the plunge. I never thought I'd miss computer games when I moved away but I'm just wanting to do something at home that isn't reading or watching stuff really. So now I'm onthe lookout for cheap games!

Well I've been having a jolly old time in York and although me and James only went there on Thursday night and came back on Saturday it feels like we've been away for ages, which is a good thing obviously. I met James at Leeds station after work and then hopped on a train to York, getting there about half 6. I'd had a bit of a silly day having forgotten my train pass and then I forgot to use my railcard for my ticket to York, silly that I am. Anyway, we made to York and found our Travelodge no problem. It's in a really good spot actually, not far from town and round the corner from Clifford's Tower. Handily we walked right pat the cinema we wanted to go to on the way there so we didn't have to wander around until we found it. The one problem with York is that nothing is in a grid system, all the streets are curved so finding anything is impossible, even with a map! We dumped our stuff at the hotel and then headed out again, to Cafe Uno for tea which was really nice. Yum yum. The dessert was especially good, I had an ice cream sundae. Mmmm.

Then we wandered to the very good yet a bit pricey cinema to see 'Science of Sleep'. Hooray! Now, after reading middling reviews for it I was a little bit worried. However, I should really learn to ignore people in general because any middling reviews were completely unfounded. I just think when your pretentiousness gets in the way of just enjoying a decent film you're really in line for a slap, and I'll happily be the one to give it to you. And it's not just me, I mean I like indepedent cinema more than James, and he really liked it too so there. Just how cute is Gael Garcia Bernal? When he was crying I just wanted to give him a hug..among other things, honestly, that films made me a little besotted with him So cute! And he acted it perfectly. In the wrong hands it could have been a little rubbish but he's got brilliant comic timing and well as being ultra versatile. He's such an underated actor, and he speaks a crazy amount of languages! Mr Gondry did me proud too, really putting his talent for camera work and ingenuity to full effect. I just really loved it. There were a few bits that I didn't get though, especially the ending where I just didn't understand why he was saying such horrible things but for the most part it was really great.

On Friday we started the day surrounded by old biddies at Fenwick's cafe for breakfast. Y'know, it still amazes me that even though me and James have been going out for so long (it occurred to me when we got to York that it was 2 and a half years ot the day that we'd been together, bizarre) there still stuff to be said and things to be learnt about each other. It's cool though, and reassuring in lots of ways. After fruit and pastries we wandered around the shops for a good while. I picked up a few things in sales. I got 'Maus' (mmm, graphic novels), Ash and Saint Etienne Best Of's (Ash because after Chantal mentioned them I realised that they used to be dead good and hadn't listened to them for ages and Saint Etienne because it was £3.60 and it's nice to have all the singles on one compilation *is obsessed*), and two Sarah Waters books. I shall be reading those *very* soon. Speaking of reading, I've finished my Anime book which was pretty hard going but interesting and now I'm reading Kay Smallshaws 'How to Run A Home Without Help' which was the gift Sarah got me when I left the library and it's very amusing, hehe. I got some Mr Men cards too so I did pretty well in terms of sale items :D Although I did go in the Japanese shop trying to buy the Autumn and Spring lucky cat displays to

Then we went and had lunch by the river Ouse (not the best name for a river is it?) on the pleasantly titled 'Jude Dench Walk'. That one made me smile I can tell you. So yes, yum yum, and after that we went on a river tour! Which was great I have to say. The tour guide was very funny and we got to see lots of stuff and lots of lovely ruins and buildings, a disappointing amount of ducks in general although there were loads of geese about. The irver was actually a foot or two higher than normal so the boat couldn't leave off its noraml platform. After the boat ride we went on the York wheel. It was great doing touristy things on Friday because it was so quiet. Saturday was crazy busy in comparison. Anyway, the wheel was lovely. York's really flat from the air and it's always lovely to see Yorkminster from a different angle, it really is a wonderful building, and York's a lovely place.

We had more of a wander about the shops, again, York's really good for little shops so it's joy to just have a look around really. Then we had a rest at the hotel, I would have played the DS if James hadn't got there first, honestly, that boy. For tea we went to Bella Italia, which we'd seen earlier in the day and had to re-trace our steps to find it again :s And that was lovely. I went for the ice cream for dessert again. So much food! Thankfully, the rest of the evening was spent in the cinema again! We went to see 'Hot Fuzz' this time. Again, I don't understand any bad reviews I've read, see above for what I think about that. It was great, so funny. I thought it was funnier than Shaun of the Dead with a sense of humour that was a lot broader. The wordplay and action comedy was brilliant and I enjoyed it a lot. I guess there's not much more to say than that is there?

We only spent half a day in York on Saturday having really done everything we'd set out to do and it felt weird that we'd been away for so short a time, it felt a lot longer. We spent last night watching TV Burp and Desperate Housewives and then drank wine and played trivia, we'd picked some pop and TV and film ones up in a sale at Smiths. It was a great way to spend an evening, I really like it. Relaxed and yet really funny at the same time. I got beaten spectacularly though, but only because I'm rubbish at TV and film.

Today we're not doing much. Although I have to say that something weird was going on outside the house. Twice now James has said that he's seen ponies at the wasteland you can see from our kitchen window. And each time I've gone to look there's been nothing there. So after teasing them that he was seeing things today I finally saw them! Two cute Shetland ponies in our own back yard! I have no idea where they come from either. Hopefully, I'll seen them being led away from the yard sometime soon :D
