I've been having a jolly old time with my days off. I'm so glad that I have another week off. During my last days of work I had an unbearable time and I'm still quite tempted to jack it all in and run away. James has suggested we run away and go travelling since his contract runs out on 1st October. I wish I could! I do just want to be doing fun stuff instead and (although I got my new inflated pay check yesterday), this job is killing me and my brain cells. And there's sod all to apply for. But hey, I'm not worrying about it for a week.

On Thursday we headed to Knaresborough. I have been going on about it for a while, just because I really wanted to go. So we did, and it was lovely! The view of the bridge is really amazing and we had a really nice wander around. Louise at work had given me tips on where to go, including telling me where the butcher was that my old line manager once bought a rabbit from, got pissed and then left the dead rabbit on a train. Yeah, not nice for the poor sap who opened that bag! We walked around the ruined castle, the gardens, had lunch by the river, went to the museum and then over to Mother Shipton's Cave. The oldest tourist attraction in the country apparently! It has a petrifying well, quite big, which overflows and anything you han over it gets wet and then petrifies. Weird but very interesting. There's a tiny museum there which has random stone things in including Agatha Christie's handbag! Knaresborough is very hilly so we hiked back into the town where we ate dinner and then went for tasty ice cream afterwards. Mandarin and black cherry - yum! A lovely day.

On Friday we went to Skipton and had dinner in Bean Loved with James' Mum. There are painted sheep sculptures about, like the ones in Manchester from a few years back (one of which I got told off by a policeman for sitting on) so we did the sheep trail and got our hair cut. We took a photo of all 25! It's a great idea for a tourist place though. Talking to our hairdresser, Alison, different people have to pay for different sheep. So the one on Coach Street, she had to chip in for! £120! And she didn't get a say in it either. Not sure what would happen if she refused to pay. We went to the Green book shop too obviously. The best shop in Skipton and I do miss it. I got three Miss Marple books, a novel about a moving zoo and another about a librarian, the latter of which I am very excited about! James found it and thought of me clearly.

On Friday evening we had another leaving do to go to! Honestly, there's hardly anyone left at the LSC now and I do wonder how we'll meet up when it shuts down. Anyway, it was Vikki and Bev D's leaving do at Gourmet Burger Kitchen. We ended up at the end with Charlotte and Rich which was fine. I had a chicken burger with camembert and cranberry sauce. So good! Being stuck at the end though, we hardly got to chat to some people. Briefly spoke to Harvs and Amy and also Helina, who's just come back from three and a half months in south east Asia so I wanted to talk to her more! Still the whole night was really fun. After the meal we went to Revolution, Millenium Square and Bourbon. Much to everyone's amusement, Charlotte and Sarah paid £15 for a pitcher of strawberry Pimms in Revolution and then, when we got to Wetherspoons. the same pitcher was £6. Haha, mugs! Seriously though, there's nowhere to dance in Leeds. I was really up for dancing too but there was no pop to be found. Bourbon were playing The Postal Service though, but alas it was dead, probably because all the students aren't here.

Saturday was a quiet one and today we briefly met up with Lucy. My plans always fall apart with Lucy, I have no idea why, it's really not because I'm unorganised! Things usually work out! Anyway, we went to Light and got treated to a bridal fashion show! Honestly, I treat people to THE best places in Leeds. Anyway, it was lovely to see her again, and I still can't believe that she didn't know that Lord Mandelson was gay!

We've been trying to catch up on taped stuff as well. Watched an episode of Swedish Wallander today which was brilliant, proof that everything is better when it's Swedish. Also watching Brothers and Sisters (shouldn't be good but somehow it is), and The Golden Girls whic is so damn good. We watched a little of Betty White on Saturday Night live the other night. So funny. I can't believe that she's the only one left :(

I'm a bit fed up today so I've put Alphabeat on as a remedy. It's working a little. It's a shame really as I've had a really nice weekend. Work is being a bit up or down though which is the problem really. On Friday I found out that I'm the only person to apply for my own post so I should be ok. Now they just need to ascertain whether I need an informal interview as it's a grade higher. Good news I guess even if I really do want to do the job. Still, they're interviewing for the new manager position tomorrow and if Eleanor doesn't get it then I'm going to be managed by someone I don't like. I don't even want to think about it.

Anyway, on Friday we went to see Britain's Got Bangra at the Playhouse. It was brilliant and there was an excellent mix of audience members. I don't even just mean 'ethnics', there was a great mix of young and old too which made a refreshing change from our point of view. The plot was slightly pointless and predictable but the music and dancing was so captivating that it didn't matter. And it was really funny. Occasionally I felt that I missed out on the odd Punjabi in-joke but it wasn't very often. The time line was 1970s until the present day and the way that they transformed the music from traditional Indian music and moved it through the ages was really very good. So yes, it was really enjoyable. The only thing missing was the more cultural struggle aspect which I find really interesting.

Saturday was a lazy day, much needed. We watched It Happened One Night, one of only three films to win the 'big five' Oscars. I've vowed to watch more old films as there really are some good ones - like this one. It's quite simple in its premise but it's very funny and the on-screen chemistry between Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert is brilliant. Although the stories around Claudette Colbert make her seem like a diva. Apparently she was quite the star then (funnily I'd never heard of her, although I've since learned that she's in Cleopatra, but still) and demanded double her usual fee to star in film and after filming she declared it the worst film she'd ever been in. bet she didn't distance herself from those Oscars afterwards though. Film stars are so interesting aren't they. They're such big celebrities and it's a kind of celebrity that is quite old. there's nothing quite like it. TV and modern music is too young for it and arts, like theater, don't create the same kind of celebrities such as Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward.

Anyway, I digress. I finished off Monkey Island 2 at the weekend too. The new spoken version is as brilliant as ever. I've perhaps unwisely started to play Dead Space. I'm not sure my nerves can take it. I'm having to ration myself to playing it in spurts because it's doing me in. I don't think I've played a horror game since Resident Evil 4 and even that was less scary, more action. This is killing me though!

On Sunday it was the Waterfront Festival. It's much nicer than the dragon boats as it's much more family orientated. They were doing falconry and jousting at the Armouries so we went to see both. they were very impressive. I'll try and put the films up on Facebook when I get a chance. Afterward we went and met Charlotte and went round to Bev's for actual socialness. Crazy. Bev's looking after Vikki's rabbit while she's on holiday so we played with him for a bit. Bev's flat it rather nice. Big windows which let the light in. Then we went back to ours for tea and chats. I didn't realise but Bev's totally made with her new law job. She's going to be a barrister and had to get through a huge application process but now she's in she's made for life unless she fucks it up (which she won't). It sounds amazing. I'd made apricot and yogurt cookies which went down a treat too and we played Wallace and Gromit's Fleeced board game which was hilarious - "You sheep stealing bitch" may have been shouted at one point. Not by me I might add.

Oh, must add that I've finished reading 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea which I really enjoyed. It gets a bit episodic near the end but I was surprised how easy to read it was and it's generally very engaging. A very good read.

Apart from work which is hellish at the minute, things have quietened down for me recently. December's often like that though. There's no theatre to go to because of pantomimes and even music buying is taking a backseat as there aren't any albums being released. Not that this is a bad thing of course. With Xmas to buy for the money's gone to that instead. I'm nearly done actually which is a nice change. I need to find something for my sister of which I have no idea and I need to find maybe two more things for James. I've just found out that there's a Peggle update for the Xbox 360 which would be great. If only you could wrap virtual gifts. Gah. Might try and get Lego Indiana Jones 2 if I can find it for around £20. Hmmm. Anyway, we put our tree up at the weekend. It's looking good although it could do with a bit more tinsel. The lights are always my favourite though so I'm sure I'll cope.

We went to Greg and Rich's flat warming on Saturday. This was good as their flat is around the corner from our house. Most of James' workmates were there which was good. There were lots of other people there too which would have been fine apart from not being introduced to them, so mingling was limited. I didn't really care but still, it might have been nice to meet some new people. So we mostly hung around with Little Bev, Jay, Sarah and Vicky. No bad thing. Their flat is great too. It's lovely and new and with there being three of them it's slightly bigger. It's not much bigger than ours though, just the living room. The party did feel a little like going to a party when you're 17. If it wasn't people making out in the kitchen (get a room!) then it was Big Bev's 'scandal' that Rich and Greg's house mate is bisexual (oh puurlease). But the best bit was when we were leaving. Little Bev and Jay went to get their coats and seemed to disturb some randoms taking drugs in there. Actually, written down it doesn't sound particularly funny but I assure you, seeing poor little Jay going 'please can I get my coat' to some 6ft red-eyed loser was quite funny. It's a house-warming party for fucks sake! But yes, despite my moaning it was fun.

We watched Happy Go Lucky the other night. I was convinced that it'd be right up my street and when it was good it really was up my street. However, I couldn't help but find Poppy incredibly irritating sometimes. She's played brilliantly but she's on the border between annoying and cute. At her worst she sounds like Ricky Gervais. This is never good. There's also no plot so there's not a whole lot of point to it all. Despite all the negativity though, it's still a three out of five affair I think.

We watched the finale of Ugly Betty Season 3 last night, great stuff. I do love it so. I love that it's so ridiculous. I think the fact that the episode was written by the creator showed too. Other than that it's been Medium and lots and lots of Arrested Development. Amazing.

I've just finished my Q Electro-pop special from a few years ago (ordered on back issue) which made for a very good read. I really want to buy a load of 80s Best Ofs now but I shall refrain and stick with the ones I've got!

After the success of Wednesday, James decided to have the day off with me on Thursday so we could head out somewhere. The weather wasn't great so we didn't go out until later but when we did we went to the Royal Armouries. I've not been completely ok with museums ever since I fainted in one in June and think I have anxiety issues related back to that. So we didn't do the whole thing as it wasn't making me feel great. I'm so terrified of fainting in public, I think it has an adverse effect on me. The thing is, I never do, but I do get headahces because of it. It's pissing me off no end. But I will conquer this. Anyway, it's a large museum anyway so doing half of it wasn't such a bad idea. It's a funny place. It still seems very new even though it's about 12 years old now and it's laid out really well. It's not in cronological order though which we weren't sure if we liked. Sometimes it's good to see the development of things across time but this would probably just means a whole floor full of boring armour if they didn that. There are a lot of things vieing for your attention too, probably to keep the kids interested but still, it can be a bit much sometimes. The best bit were the interpretations which we saw two of. They solo pieces based on memoires or real accounts. We saw a Falklands soldier and Anne Boleyn and it really helped to put historical events in context.

After work on Friday we went bowling for Bev Spence's birthday. This was only the second time I'd ever been remember and I now without barriers. In fact, I came third in my lane which I was very pleased with. My arm still aches now which is really some indication of how much I need to work on my guns. It was a full house out I think so it was good to see everyone. I didn't get to chat to half of them though as we had to head off at 8 to the Cockpit (yes, again) as we had another gig to see.

This time it was VV Brown. Out of Alphabeat, Frankmusik and her she was the cheapest so I expected it to be, not more amaturish especially, but perhaps less confident. Not so. She was absolutely stunning, and from the Grace Jones like mask she came on with to the absolutely brilliant big black man of a bassist it was just brilliant. I can't find an ordered set list online but she did the following:

Quick Fix
Game Over
Leave!
Bottles
Crying Blood (acoustic)
Crying Blood (reggae version)
Viva La Vida (Coldplay cover)
Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Back In Time
I Love You
Caroline (new song)
L.O.V.E
Everybody
Travelling Like The Light
Shark In The Water
-------------
Sex On Fire (Kings Of Leon cover)

The covers I could have done without obviously but my favourite was probably the new song, Caroline which was just stunning, it really blew me away. The whole set was brilliant though. She did all the album apart from one track so kerching - value for money too. Everyone seemed really into it all, including myself. So, so good.

We've had a slow weekend. Yesterday evening we went out for a meal though, to Chaophraya, a Thai place not far from us. It was really nice inside. It's a little hidden away but we were surprised to find it quite full when we got there and by the time we left it was bursting! The staff bring you cake and sing to you if it's your birthday. We know this because we heard the same thing three times! Drinking a lovely fruit cocktail, I had a duck stir fry with a fruity sauce. I'm not a spicy fan and some people are funny about fruity stuff with meat but I love it. My duck had a peach sauce and had grapes and apples in it along with peppers and onions. So tasty. I then copped out with coconut ice-cream but James had chilled tapioca with melon ice. Weird but tasty, I suppose it's like cold rice pudding right? James paid which was very nice but really, it's how a Master of Science should be treated right? :p

We've watched a lot of TV stuff over the weekend and I don't often write about. However, over the past few days we've been watching:

Doctor Who (this really shook me up actually and has easily been the best of the specials. Lindsey Duncan is a brilliant actor)
Farscape (Just started, I've been missing Sci-Fi)
Medium
Have I Got News For You
The Thick Of It
Beautiful People (Like Gimme Gimme Gimme it often suggers from a weak script off-set by great performances, but it's set in 1997/8 so I can relate to so much).

Work is hell at the moment, today was just awful. But it's that time of year. What's that you say? Why yes, time to get a new job.

I can't believe that I forgot to mention going to the cinema last Wednesday. We went to see District 9. Despite it being out for over a month the cinema was still nearly packed which was a surprise and I really enjoyed it. It was one of my films that restored my faith in film-making, simply because it wasn't set in America, was done on quite a tight budget and yet still had the best CGI I've ever seen in a film. I was convinced that the 'Prawns' were half CGI, half animatronics but no, they were all CGI. Some of it was quite grim and the 'baddie' was lame, however it was generally really compelling and really well done, I recommend it.

On Friday night we were out as more of James' workmates are leaving. They're dropping like flies. Sarah is off to do her LPC which is a crazy price and sounds incredibly hardcore. It makes my course seem like a cheap walk in the park! And Rich is off to work elsewhere. It seems that Rich and Charlotte are officially an item. They took their sweet time about that, but I'm glad they are, they're such a sweet couple. Charlotte reminds me of Miranda loads and Rich is so dozy. He's not stupid though in the slightest but, yeah, they work well together. Office romances seem to be quite common at James' place, I suppose they're all of a similar age. We started off at The Palace and stayed there for a good while. Silly really as we were having to buy crazy priced wine as all the cheap stuff had gone. Then we went to Smokestack which was a fruity jazz bar. Well, I suppose it was playing motown so maybe not so fruity or jazz. Nice place though. Then it was Fibre, possibly the first 'gay' place we've been to in Leeds, and it's round the corner from our flat too! Lame. James was at a work do the other week with Rich and Greg and they were telling him what a good night out Queen's Court is, adding that it was wrong that two straight guys were telling a gay guy where the good nights out were. We fail at life.

I ended up having my ear talked off by Nat, Ian's girlfriend, for bloody ages! She's one of those people who is really clever and yet still comes across as a bit dim. She's nice enough but I couldn't see myself getting on with that much outside of social situations we're not thrown into together. Life's too short! It was a good night though, even if we didn't get to do any dancing. No matter. We paid for it the next day though. Lack of sleep and too much to drink = not good.

So the weekend was a rather lazy one. We had the misfortune of watching Camp Rock which had rubbish songs, rubbish preachy overtones and rubbish characters. When you start shouting 'throw a potato at her!' or 'stab her in the face' you know it's not good. To remedy this we watched High School Musical 3 - tonnes better. At least it's actually funny. And it wasn't nearly as predictable as it could be. The songs weren't quite as good as the second one though, too many ballads but it was very good overall. Oh, there weren't enough Zefron topless shots either. I'm loath to admit it but he really is very hot. I think he's a good actor too for what it's worth.

Sad news now - our DVD player has packed in. It keeps skipping discs which is damn annoying as we've only had it for two and half years and we use it for reconrding TV stuff too. However, it does mean that we've had to move the Xbox to the living room so at least I can play games on the big TV. Yay! I had to put up with James playing Peggle which I was on the phone to my family last night. I think I'll be seeing all of them by the end of the month. My Mum, Dad and sister might be up in a few weeks and then Jonathan's coming to the computer game convention the week after. Good stuff! Especially as my Dad still hasn't seen the flat. James' Dad hadn't either until yesterday when his family visited. We went for lunch at Bella Italia. I had pasta with sausage in a tomato sauce with peppers. Tasty goodness. This was followed by a Lemon Tart. Om nom nom.

I must mention Chris Packham's controversial comments about letting pandas die out because they're in an evolutionary cul-de-sac. Now I know it's a bit harsh but water his comments down a bit and he's not entirely mad. I mean, the EDGE project lists the top 100 mammals/reptiles that need saving and one of their criteria is that they are evolutionarily unique/valuable. i just thought it was interesting. I really do think though that all government initiatives are gesture. Environmental concern is all so slowly done, it's like nobody really can be arsed to do anything about it. Now I'm not one to bang on about this type of stuff. It is important, but I think that it's the governments job to impose the solutions on us. Still, when they try and do that you get people stockpiling lightbulbs banging on about how they couldn't possibly live with a little less light. Sometimes I think that people deserve their fate. Gah!

I had dream last night where I bumped into Heather Small in the street and made her sing. I also dreamt that I used to live with Alan Carr in Manchester and reminiscing about with him including remembering the hilarious tale about how we were digging up the garden and found a massive pineapple there. Yes, as if I needed an reassurance that my head is not right I have the proof right there. I'm debating whether to go back the doctors actually as my 'illess' has moved on to involve back ache, pressure in my head and light-headedness. It's doing my head in!

I have joined the dark side! Yes, I have opened a twitter account. It's kind of an experiment really as I've given it a good slagging off in the past. However, I am quite enjoying it. It by no means replaces blogs or any other web 2.0 applications (and it shouldn't either, the internet is already making our attention spans shorter as it is), but it certainly makes more sense when you join it. From the outside it's impossible to navigate but if you join it's almost like having an MSN conversation with people except that you can see lots of conversations going on at the same time, as well as little thoughts. Plus, I can talk at celebrities in the vain that they might notice me. It's by no means the second coming like the Guardian bang on about though. So yeah, if anyone wants to add me then feel free. I'm magic_treehouse. Finding people to follow is a task though!

I was out Friday with people from James' work. I was feeling fine and was in good spirits and it was a great night all told. We started off at The Palace for food. Proper summer weather too. People seemed to be doing that annoying thing of 'moving on' though when we were perfectly happy with The Palace itself, plus, Revolution's drinks prices were about three times as much. Annoying. Still it was a laugh. I ended the night walking home with Vicky who'd took a chance with one of her free under-26s theatre tickets and ended up seeing a play involving a man with a massive penis chasing nymphs. At least she didn't pay for the privilege. We want to arrange tickets to go and see the Dracula ballet and Dial M for Murder. Good stuff.

We had a fairly quiet weekend. In fact, I can't remember anything we did apart from go and eat at the Museum cafe (always nice). Oh, we did watch Single White Female which, although it was a little slow to get going, was actually very good. Once it actually morphed into a thriller it was very good. I'll never look at stilettos in the same way again! Alas, there was far too much unecessary boobage for my liking.

On Monday evening we went out to Aagrah for a curry. Despite it being a little too close to my work place it was a lovely meal, I highly recommend it. I had a weird curry with lychees in it! Lovely though.

Yesterday I had my interview at Halifax library. Despite me having a useless map and going the wrong way to get there, I made it on time on account of a friendly elderly man helping me. The interview went really actually. We talked about all kinds of things; helping the elderly to learn computer skills, web 2.0, all kinds of things. There weren't any questions I couldn't answer. In fact, for some of the questions I had loads of evidence so I might have gone on a bit. It's better than the alternative. There's also the chance that the job might come out as being paid than it looks as it's under job evaluation. However, they had 80 applicants for the post and are interviewing for three days so my chances of getting it are slim whatever so I can't get my hopes up really. Especially as I've just seen what my current pay increase takes my wage up to. Over 20k! I'm only 0.8 though so I'm now on over 16K. Great stuff. I never realised that 5% would be so much. Can't get too attached to it though!

And that brings me up to date I think :D Oh, and the Frankmusik album is very good. Kind of like a better Cut Copy.

Has anybody seen this?:

Link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Common-People-Brit-Story-Box-Set/dp/B0027WJEDS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1245756031&sr=8-1

I ordered it yesterday and it's a pretty good compilation. I'm not quite sure why I'm so excited by it as I own most of the stuff on it already but it's compiled by Bob from Saint Etienne and the booklet is a mini-Select magazine! It also doesn't ignore the late-90s which I much prefer musically to the mid-90s. I might buy the Britpop issue of Mojo to read while I listen to it and then I pretend I'm 13 again - while still giving intermitant spins of the Little Boots album which is really very good.

Last Thursday me and James went to Skipton. I had a haircut so I'm back to it being shorter again. The experiment didn't last that long it seems, plus it was getting difficult to see. Not good. It was funny being back. I've not been back since we moved and I don't really miss it at all. It's a nice place to visit. I don't regret not moving sooner really although it would have been good to have done it earlier, but then we wouldn't have got the flat we did and it's not like we didn't go anywhere when we were in Skipton. But I'm much happier in Leeds now. Anyway, we met James' Mum, had lunch at the Canalside and then went to Carleton. I was feeling a bit weird for reasons I won't go into apart from saying that it comes from me and James having a slight 'rough patch' which is all sorted now. I use that term loosely as it's really not a big deal but I'm glad it sorted out. I like going back to James' old room, it reminds me of good times (ok, that sounds wrong). It reminds me of visiting him and for some reason it reminds me of summer, probably because I stayed with him for a week there once a few years ago. Good times.

Saturday was quite laid-back really. We went shopping which was pretty much the highlight, and failed again to get any balcony furniture. Summer will have gone before we find any decent stuff! Sunday involved lunch at the Leeds Museum with Vicki, Bev D, Charlotte and Sarah, followed by bowling. Now I know that this is odd but I've never been bowling before so I was prepared to be really, really bad at it. However it wasn't too bad. I came fourth which was happy about. I even got a strike! Go me! It was pretty fun all round. The weather was good too so afterwards we went home and played Boggle on the balcony. Good stuff! Oh, and I won, I must mention that.

We plan to watch the new Terminator film this week so we're watching the previous ones before we go. So far we've seen the first two, both of which are very good although they're both very different films. The first one is very much a thriller but the second seems to have more to it, and it's funnier too. I couldn't decide if there's a little too much humour which takes away from the the scariness of it though. Mostly I couldn't quite get over the transformation between the Sarah Connors, they are such different characters, and yet still Linda Hamilton. It's the third one tonight. I might do my job application form while watching it as I'm not expecting much. :s

Oh, I almost forgot, I'm going to Leeds Party In The Park! Yay! And it's free! The line up is a bit hit and miss but I can't complain. I can have a wander about when Tinchy Stryder and Agnes are on and then come back for The Noisettes and Little Boots. Those last two are probably the most exciting but thre's enough there to keep me entertained :D

Well I don't know what I was moaning about really as the flat warming party was great, really fun stuff. I think there were ten of us in total - Simon, Rich, Bev, Sarah, Charlotte, Amy, Laura, Jay and then us too. Wine was drunk and food was eaten and it was quite nice to actually have more than two people in the flat. Board games were indeed played including Jenga, Disney Trivia Pursuit, Pass the Bomb and Articulate. Articulate was especially hilarious as it's amazing how much you can describe using the word 'penis'. Who knew?! So yeah, it was a big hit really. I think I only won Pass The Bomb though, which is better than nothing. We then headed off to Baja which turned out to be great. It was Charlotte's idea and I think she was a little annoyed that there weren't more people there. Me and James thought that this was great as we had the dancefloor to ourselves and we got all of our requests played. Brilliant. It's funny what turned out to be good to dance to. La Roux - not so good, Lady Gaga on the other hand is very good. I'm a bit of a fence sitter when it comes to the Gaga but the middle 8 of 'Just Dance' is my favourite thing ever, and there are pictures on Facebook to prove it. The last song of the night was Beyonce's 'Single Ladies' which I not only requested, I also got to show the world my Single Ladies dance. I can die happy.

On Saturday we were a little worse for wear so we didn't do a lot. The weather's been pretty good (up to the freak thunderstorm on Monday afternoon) so we sat on the balcony and played Trivia Pursuit and Boggle. Good times.

Then on Sunday Bev drove us plus Charlotte to Eureka! in Halifax, a, errrr, children's museum. It was fun though, even though it was totally geared towards children. I wouldn't have been as fun if it was just us two though, so yeah, it was worth it if just for giant Connect 4. Funny how we didn't learn anything at all though. Give me a 'proper' museum any day. Again the weather was nice so we ain't dinner (lovely vegetable chilli) outside and then had an ice cream on the grass later on. Halifax seems nice. This is good as I'm applying for a job there at the moment. So we shall see.

So yeah, a good weekend overall and it was nice to do something social for a change. Other than that, we've watched a few films of late. Firstly, 'Transformers' which I wasn't that keen to see I have to say. However, I really enjoyed it in the end. Confusing at times though, mostly since some of the robots look the same. It was nearly as stupid as I thought it might be though, surprisingly. The other film we watched was 'Nanny McPhee' which reminded me a lot of 'Penelope' in the sense that it was a bit of weird kids film. I really enjoyed it though, and not just because I want to marry Emma Thompson. It looks great, the kids are great and finally - Angela Lansbury! What's not to like?
magictreehouse: (Default)
Because my last posts have been about rambling on certain topics I've neglected to actually update with news. Firstly, books! It was my book group last week and we read Marcus Zusak's 'The Book Thief'. It was very good and I have to say and it was interesting to see WWII from a German point of view. I loved that it was narrated by Death and it was very skillfully written in that it was quite easy to read, and not particularly depressing. However, when it hit, it hit hard. The ending was especially horrible, but I never found it a chore to read. Great stuff. I'm whizzing through books at the minute which is good. I read Armistead Maupin's 'Michael Tolliver Lives' which was a joy to read. Technically he's not the best writer but he has such a skill for making wonderful characters and observations on people. He always has some wonderful quotes. The one that's stuck with me is about getting older - 'You don't have to keep up, you just have to keep open' which I think is very true. It was odd seeing the characters from the series set in the modern day, but it did make me realise how much I'd missed them. It was also surprisingly sex filled. No bad thing! Haha. I'm reading Harlen Coben now which I'm enjoying despite having it forced upon me!

Music news now and I have booked tickets to see Saint Etienne play all of Foxbase Alpha! Yay! Although I have to say that I prefer their stuff really, they're very good live so I know they'll be good fun. It's at the Sheffield Leadmill too so it'll be nice to take advantage of the living in Leeds! And of course go back to Sheffield. I my devouring 80's music quest I've just got Erasure's new Best Of which I'm loving. I was surprised by how many I knew actually and this is solely down to my Mum (again). She used to listen to them a lot when I was little. It's funny how much music I absorbed without realising it. Are there any other 80s bands that I should delve into? Note - they do need a Best Of for me to sample!

Moving house is turning out to be quite stressful. We got a removal quote through this morning. Not pretty. And I'm slowly realising that I can only cope with two large things going in my life. Those spaces are now full what with work and Uni. I can't cope with anything else! However, things have got better but I'll just be glad to get there now. It is a hassle.

On Tuesday night we went to see Othello. I'd been for a work three-course lunch for dinner at Live Bait so I didn't want anything to eat really, so we went to the Playhouse and hung around there. Lenny Henry was Othello and he was fairly good. He did have a tendancy to shout his way through it and I do find the play itself to be a little wordy and hard to follow. The worst thing about it though was the stupid audience who seemed to think that because Lenny Henry was in it it must be comedy. It's a harrowing play and so how people could laugh at lines where Othello talks about killing his wife and how Iago is an honest character is beyond me. And it was very irritating. The play itself was good though, it's a tough one to do, but it was Northern Broadside so it ws reliably good.

We were out last night. It was James' workmate Helina's leaving do and as an honourary LSC members I was invited (nobody else's partner gets to come along to these things!). There were loads of people there, both old and new staff. We first went to Revolution for a few drinks and then on to Akbar's for a lovely curry. I got to chat to most people really and I had a good time. However, by the time we got to OK Karaoke I was a bit tired really. I've yet to sing there but when we can walk home that stage will be mine!

Last Wednesday was my monthly book group which featured our newest member, a one month old baby. Thankfully she was very good and didn't make a sound. I picked the wrong seat as I was sat directly opposite the mother who was breast-feeding. It doesn't bother me at all, it's just that for a second I had that age old thing of the panic of, 'where do I look?!' Well it turns out that you look at their face, like any normal person. Who would have thought? Anyway, the book was David Mitchell's 'Black Swan Green' which I have to say I enjoyed more the second time around. My complaints the first time round were that I've been a 13 year old boy so it was a little like 'been there, done that' and second, some of the school nightmarish stuff was a little close to the truth for me. However, I'm come to appreciate how well written it is. It's so spot on for a 13 year boy, it hurts and it's a book with great depth to it. I thought it was interesting that the two people in our group from Canada and America really liked it too even though it's a very British book. The two also said that the music mentioned during the book was exactly the same as what they had heard in 1982. It's funny how music of an era can be a very worldwide thing, despite the UK been a very central point for pop music in general. I'm always thankful that our charts are a lot more diverse than America's, I think we have a good mix in general (the 15 year old me would hate me for saying that).

On Thursday I headed to the bank to collect my Icelandic Krona. We've got a good exchange rate I feel and the money has some amusing hatted ladies on and a man with the most amazing beard ever. If Icelandic men don't all have wonderful beards I will be most upset. I also upgraded our joint account to a 'plus' account so we're covered for travel insurance and get premium rates on our ISAs. I'm also covered for car breakdown so if your car dies you want me in it! I spent the rest of the day cooking nice things. I made one of my fat free cakes, a bread and butter pudding and then made a nice meal for James consisting of salmon, mashed potatoes and honey and orange glazed parsnips. Omnomnomnom. It was a hit at least!

On Friday night I went out with James and his workmates, firstly to Elbow Rooms where I had quite a bit of wine. Good times though. I'm glad I went in the end, I was considering not as I wasn't feeling too great. After hanging about there for a good few hours we headed off to OK Karaoke where we had a booth of all things. Well, for an hour at least. I managed to rock Girls Aloud and Prince. Hot. When we were back in the main room I got to hear James sing 'Walking In Memphis' with Laura. He was surprisingly good! I'm nto quite sure what else happened that night really. I do remember quoting Mean Girls with Vicki for ages though so overall it was pretty good!

Saturday we took things fairly easy but on Sunday we vowed to leave the house and had a drive around the Dales. It's on our doorstep and I always think it's a shame that we don't take advantage of it more often, so Sunday righted that wrong really. And it was beautiful. We have the most amazing scenery here. We went up towards Grassington, Kettlewell, over the massive hills (with snow!) and then back down through Malham. Some of those roads were scarily steep! I took some photos whice I'll put up soon too. On the way back we stopped off at James' parents to give his Dad his birthday present but we didn't stop for long.

So yeah, a good few days all told. Today, someone I work with went to a ceremony to official become a UK citizen. Amusingly he paid £100 so he could have his own ceremony and not 'graduate' with all the commoners. Haha. Also great was the mystery, commemorative gift. We guessed beforehand what it could be. I won. It was a mug with 'Leeds' on. Haha.

The rest of time I've pretty been much listening to Kim Wilde. I'm obsessed at the minute.

I can't believe I haven't updated for so long for no other reason other than work's been so busy. Now that's not usually a reason for not updating but I've been flat out for the past two days. Monday put me behind as I got to the train station in the morning only to see that trains to Leeds were cancelled. Alternative routes were going to take ages so I 'worked from home'. You figure out what that means. Although, actually I did do some work as I could access the spanking new Virtual Learning Environment. Our team of four had our photo taken for the page so we are online for all staff to see (thankfully this is an internal thing). So yeah, busy but in a good way as our new team are on a four man mission to revolutionise admin in the College.

Anyway, that's boring. At the weekend Lucy came to see us. We met her from the train station at arond half 6 and she had a mega huge suitcase with her. She assures us that it was full fo sleeping bags but I reckon that it was empty and her comment about us having the 'biggest DVD collection ever' makes me think that she's smuggled some of those home with her. Hmmm. Anyway, we picked up cocktail ingredients on the way home and after our Indian I made, what turned out to be 'Mighty Rand's'. 'Mighty' because they were tasty. To make a Mighty Rand you will need vodka, peach schapps and pineapple juice. You can also make Juicy Lucys which are the same but topped up with Morissons peach and mandarin juice. Classy. So we drank those and played Scattergories. It was great fun actually and it was nice to entertain in our house for a change.

On Saturday after awakening the cosy Lucy we headed out into town. I don't think Lucy's ever seen so many charity shops. We managed to get some good stuff too. I got some 'Rand' party pickers so now I can hold cocktail parties AND supply people with party snacks. I also went into the library and found a book group to join. Their next meeting is today which wasn't very good but the next one is October so I'll go to that. I hope it's not just full of old people though. I shall see anyway. It only meets once a month either way. We had lovely dinner in Cafe Jaca and then we had a wander to the castle. Lovely stuff. We mostly just talked about Disneyland! Lucy's LJ comments about James being hotter than in photos have made me laugh. 'Lucky Rand!' indeed! It was lovely to see Lucy and I'm glad that someone actually thought to come and see *us* for a change. In fact, it's nice to know that I have a friend out there who gives as much as takes. We're well aware tht we live ages apart but neither of us puts pressure to visit the other and we see each other when we can. I couldn't ask for anything more really.

We didn't really do anything for the rest of the weekend. I've been playing the Broken Sword games because I realised that they'd released some new ones and I'd only ever played the first two. So I'm on number 2 at the moment. They're very funny and still look great. It helps that they're set in Paris (well, the first one at least) which made me feel like I wanted to go back there!

We've watched quite a few films over the past few days. The first one was 'Crank' which was absolutely ludicrous and totally made for 'macho guys'. However, despite this it was quite fun and wouldn't have been anything without the nice direction and editing. It was also really fast paced too and this worked well, much like 'Run Lola Run' or something like that. On the other side of things we've also watched 'Bright Young Things' which I really enjoyed despite the total lack of plot. It's very funny and very Stephen Fry. It's directed well though and doesn't show signs of it being his first directed film. I'm sure we watched another film but I can't think for the life of me what it was!

I have just finished my book on 'The Alphabet' which was very interesting. I learnt a lot considering it was just one chapter a letter. It's fascinating where letters have come from and why we write the way we do. I managed to pick up loads of stupid fact such as that most words in Elnglish start with the letter 'S' and that the least used letter is 'Z' (and also why 'Z' is zee in America and 'zed' in England). The newest letter in the alphabet is 'J' which wasn't fully accepted until the 1850's oddly. Just silly things like that. I'm not sure what to read next really.

Work's been quite good lately. I quite like this new set-up we have. I think the sunny weather is having a good effect on everyone :) I do hope that I get to stay in a way. I still haven't heard back form the uni though so I still don't know what's going on. I've just been given some really nice tasks to do over the summer which I'm finding quite interesting. Here's hoping :D Last night, after work I went for a drink with James and his workmates. I like drinking outside in the summer, I can't really put my finger on why. It just makes me happy. Gareth was with his boyfriend and whenever I'm around another gay couple (which happens rarely) I can't help but compare me and James to them. I must stop doing it really, it's a terrible habit.

I haven't really been up to much else of note. Might go to Sheffield at the weekend, just for a day out, although my Sheffield friends are being rather quiet about getting together and after last weekend, I think I just want a quiet one. If it's nice I think it might be a good idea to go and sit in the park or something.

Oh, I watched the next episode of Heroes too. It's still great and it seems like there are a fair few people watching it too.

Oh, and my banana bread was very nice :D

Haha! Following on from my rant about the store Cex, I've just been on to the gamespot website and someone has posted a rant on there that says exactly the stuff I was saying! Except that there's is about the one in Kingston, which shows that it's a nationwide thing. Oh, and the music they get is rap and hiphop as opposed to the metal you get in Leeds. If I didn't know better I'd say they'd been reading my LJ!

Friday lunchtime involved a trip out with fellow workmates James, Amy and Bex. We were going to go to the Cactus Lounge. Amy had suggested we do on account of it closing at the end of the week. However, when we arrived we found that it was already shut. Damn. However, we made up for it with a lovely pub lunch at The Palace (?). It was lovely, especially as the weather was oddly nice. Actually, in general, the past three (carrying on into today too by the looks of things) days have been proper summer weather and it's been nice. I didn't realise how used to the crap wetness I was. Summer might actually have arrived! Anyway, the lunch was really good and made me feel like I might have actually have made some friends here. It'll be a shame to go in a way, although I'll still be in Leeds and with good old Facebook on the case I won't be far away. I arrived back into the office to find that my boss has been given a leaving date of two weeks time. Odd but at least things are sorted now I guess. We're having an easy week as she's away all week. Deal or No Deal anyone?

James arrived back on Friday night and it was lovely to see him again. I'd missed him, even with Mr Moo as company. On Saturday morning I had a hair cut and we had a quick look around town before I headed off to Preston in the afternoon for Feef's birthday party :D I'd never been to Preston before but it doesn't seem as grim as I thought it might be! And Feef's house is really nice as is the new man. I arrived at the station to be greeted by a mermaid (Feef), a fighter pilot (Simon), a gangster (Biggie) and the WORST NINJA EVER (Rich). I had no costume so I was later made to dress up as Fiona. I will say no more on the matter except that I look fucking hot in a dress. There are photos. I fear for my life. I'm not worried though, because for everyone else dignity wasn't a priority either.

So after a few drinks and catching up (believe me, I had a lot to catch up with, and I don't mean news wise either - bunch o' drunks) we were met with the arrival of Lindsey (a diva/drag queen. Backcombed hair - Utterly amazing!) and Laura (Groucho Marx/vicar). I'd not met Laura before but she's lovely and we told Lindsey so. I get the impression that Lindsey considers herself to be quite lucky considering that by her account, 'most lesbians are awful' so yay for her! The evening ploughed on and much fun was had. A highlight was Biggie getting his cock out (and what party would be complete without it?) and Lindsey being utterly horrified by it. I have never seen somebody so disgusted by anything in my life and I'm glad I got photos of her face (but not the cock thankfully). Photos will follow. People gradually passed out leaving me and Biggie. We went to bed and talked about a range of things including bumsex, gays, Prince and music, pretty much a fitting description of my life in fact. I must also mention me being described as 'buffed up' by several party guests which i found odd because if anything I'm less healthy than I was a year ago. I think they were just muddling up 'buffed up' with simply 'buff'. Oh, and I was most amused that Lindsey's hair had still not gone down in the morning. Wonderful.

I got an fairly early train back which i was glad of in the end because I just wanted to collapse, recover and ingest something with vitamins in. I haven't been that drunk in ages and I know why. I'm still recovering today! Sad but true. I got back to find an also recovering James, as he'd been out last night too. Turns out he'd been talking to Theatre Tom for ages and carried on the conversation at our house. He hadn't clicked that we were together which is funny. I can't believe we've finally got a friend and he's moving away! Silly but not surprising!

The rest of the day was spent feeling a bit queasy and playing Lego Star Wars. So it wasn't all bad then. I'm looking forward to a quiet week I think. I've just seen another library job to apply for. I've gone for it because it ends today. It's at Leeds Uni. There are three posts going too so I'd stand a fairly ok chance of getting one. However, it's five days a week, four hours a day so I bet it'll clash with my studying. I'm still waiting for a reply about the hours of study required but I can always turn it down. Now that I've seen that there a lot of stuff coming up though I'm fairly enthusiatic about getting a library job rather than stay where I am. We'll see though.

Oh, and we watched 'Heroes' at the weekend. It's good isn't it? Naturally my favourite is the Japanese man. I love the fact that it's like a comic movie but it's on TV and it seems deadly serious. It's quite nice to see that on top of the much-loved cartoonishness of the X-Men and other superhero films.

My God what is going on with this weather?! It's been raining for days and they're announcing flood warnings. Does Leeds flood? Or more importantly, do canals?! Specifically canals in Skipton at the bottom of my road?! The trains were awful this morning too. I've just seen Helen who said that she's just arrived into work because her's were so bad. And the office is dead today as so many people are off, it's eerie.

Last night, I went out with James and his workmates. it turns out that I do know Darren from the Alsager library. We just kept saying how weird it was all night because it really is quite bizarre. We were out for Wayne's leaving do and at the end of evening with only me, James, Darren and Wayne at Wetherspoons, things ended in a proper soap-opera style which was quite unbelievable. Part of me often wishes that I could work where James does just because the people he works with are such a laugh but on the otherhand I don't think I could cope with all of the back-biting and drama! I'm intrigued to know what'll happen next re: Wayne though :s the socialness did me good though. We had a curry at the pub and were joined by Janine, Darren's girlfriend at the end of the evening who was making me laugh a lot. So yeah, it was a good night. Too much wine made me really not want to go to work this morning though :s

For some reason I realised last night how little contact I've had with straight men over the years. I mean, at school and College (bar the odd one) I was always friends with either the gays or girls and that's something that continued throughout uni. I didn't have a single straight male friend at uni which is odd. it's only after uni's ended that I've really come into contact with that kind of person which is just bizarre but it's good at the same time. I always used to think that I'd never have anything in common with straight guys but that not really true. It's just funny to think about.
