I've been having a jolly week off. So much so that today is especially hard, being back at work. I hate my job, so I'm kicking into action Plan B. I'm going to start applying for part-time library work and see where I end up. It's quite nice earning an ok wage (especially on 4 days a week) but with library jobs being few and far between I can't just wait for a perfect job to come up. It's nearly a year since I got my MSc and I'm still here. So There's a good, 20-hour a week job at University of Leeds which I'll go for. I guess I'm too comfortable here but if I want to get out then I really need to take a risk.

On Bank Holiday Monday we did the new, extended Leeds Owl Trail. I recently emailed the people who do it with some extra owls we found and I got a reply today to say that they're not actually Heritage owls, they're 'scare' owls. Fake owls! Who knew?! We finished up near Millennium Square so we went to Spice Quarter for lunch and had their all you can eat buffet. It was so good! I'd never used a chocolate fountain before, fun stuff!

On Wednesday we went to see Scott Pilgrim Vs The World which I really enjoyed. It's fun stuff. I have a love/hate relationship with 'geeky' (I can't think of another way to describe them!) films. For me they either try too hard (Lost In Translation) or have really unlikeable characters (Ghost World, Juno), but then I'm aware that the ones I hate, other people really love, and the ones that I love (Eternal Sunshine for example) also divide people and can have the same arguments that I've just mentioned fired back at it. I've never know any other type of movie to divide people in such a way. Anyway, I'm glad to say that it was on the right side. It was really funny and there were a surprising amount of characters in it. My only problem was that I didn't care if George Michael (no, not that one) got the girl or not, Knives was much cooler and he totally should have run away with her at the end instead of being blinded by Ramona's colourful hair.

On Saturday we went to Lotherton Hall. Typically the summer bus that goes straight there had stop running last week so we had to get the bus to Aberford and walk a mile to reach the place. It really is in the middle on nowhere. Still, it was worth it. It has a free bird garden which was really nice, especially as the weather was great. And the house itself is stunning. There are no ropes holding you back from wandering around, the windows are large and let loads of light in and so the house doesn't have that cold, hollow feeling that a lot of similar big houses can have. There were a lot of worldwide knickknacks around along with bird artifacts, and an exhibit upstairs which had fashion items influenced by birds. All really interesting. We had dinner in the café where James declared that 'there are a lot of lumpy people around aren't there?' and we walked around the grounds and had a really nice chat about family and other things. A great day.

We got back and walked through the market where I saw a teenage mum pushing a pram wearing an 'I *heart* Justin Beiber T-shirt. I cried inside. In the evening we went to see Witness For The Prosecution at Leeds Grand. I love Agatha Christie and it's surprising how much work she did on the stage. The play is wonderful, although it's very wordy so you do have to concentrate. All the twists at the end totally pay off.

Must mention the book I'm reading. I've just read Superfreakonomics which was great, and now I'm on to the Bad Book Affair. I should read more novels with a librarian as the main character. I'm loving it. I'm really into reading at the moment.

Music-wise I haven't really bought anything new apart from the new Kim Wilde album. The Hurts album is on the way though. I've mostly just been listening to Dragonette - 'Get your titties off my things'!

Might be booking a Xmas trip to Denmark/Sweden soon. More details to follow.

So Spamalot turned out to be amazing! We always forget where our seats are as we book things so far in advance sometimes. Turns out we were on the front row. Now that's an experience. It was hilarously funny and although large parts of it were taken from the Holy Grail, there was enough new stuff and it was fresh enough for the stage, to keep it really entertaining. Some bits were just hilarious, like the killer rabbit. The cast varies from place to place but the Leeds one had Marcus Brigstock and Todd Carthy, plus some woman from Emmerdale who I recognised. Lancelot was totally flirting with James as well. He kept eyeing him up and then, at the wedding scene mouthed 'I'm sorry' at him. Slut. In full Hairspray mode we hung around the actor entrance to get autographs and pictures. Unlike Hairsray however there was only us hanging around. No matter! We got to meet Lancelot in person which was funny. James introduced himself as 'I don't know if you remember me...'. to which he laughed and said 'yes,. I remember you.'. haha. And then James introduced me as 'my Lancelot' and he shook my hand. All is forgiven though because he had a lovely arse. We then got to meet Todd Carthy, Marcus Brigstock and Emmerdale woman. Amazing. Photos were taken too. Todd Carthy is quite small in real life and Marcus is just like he is on the TV. He was with his family and we did feel a little stalkerish as we were walking the same way home as he was. A good night was had by all!

I've spent the day applying for a job at Leeds Uni. It was similar to what I do now but for more pay. But then I stopped because I realised that even though it might be a little more secure (until July anyway) I didn't really want to jump in at the deep end in a job I don't really like anyway. Plus I'd have to try and be enthusiastic at the interview. So instead I've been chipping away at the library avenue. I've found out that I can actually get to the British Library by bus, I didn't think I could so that's a main job market I've been missing. Stupid really. And I've been finding out more about the Leeds relief register. I signed up in November and heard nothing. This is because they haven't done any induction since October which makes sense. The guy I spoke to is meeting with the library in a few weeks so that might be quite good. I need to drum up some enthusiasm as I graduate on Thursday and I'm not looking forward to it at all :(

Well today is not the best of days. I went for an interview yesterday at Leeds College of Art and I'm guessing that the silence following means that I haven't got it. I'm really annoyed with myself about it really. There were only four candidates so I had a good chance. The job had change which site it was based at so I had a tour of both sites and both are lovely small libraries. The one where the job was based was more FE orientated which would have been nice and different. It didn't help that I mucked up the test good and proper. I had to put 20 books in Dewey order (easy) and then write down the bibliographic reference of one of them. I still don't know what that means. Harvard reference? I think I was thrown by the fact that they told us that the job would entail a lot of cataloguing and since I'd never catalogued a book in my life I wrote it as a catalogue reference, or what I thought one would look like anyway. Still, I was prepared to sell myself at the interview and talk about how my current workplace even has its courses validated by the Open University as well and how it was clearly meant to be. However, I didn't get a chance to sell myself at all as the interview took about 15 minutes. I talked about why I wanted the job and was given a few scenarios which were easy enough but I didn't get to say much as all. I had all kinds of things to say about equal opportunities and all sorts. I'm so fed up about it all. I've got another job to apply for which would usually keep me going a bit but it's a medical library and I know less about that than I do about art! Why do libraries hate me so much?!

I dunno if I've been up to much else this week. We've been catching up on TV stuff I guess. We've finished watching the (not so) new series of Skins which was fairly good. So many of the characters are massive dicks though, I found it hard to care and wanted a fair few of them to get what they deserved. The excessive and over-exaggerated use of drink, drugs and sex was also a little off-putting. I know that's the point of Skins but I found it really divorced from reality this time around. Also - extremely mopey. More so than the last lot. It's had its moments though. We're also coming to the end of Medium series 3 which is brilliant. It's one of the most underrated shows. It's quite X-file-y but the excellent family scenes ground it so well. It's a joy to watch, and so original with it. The way its filmed is also quite interesting. A lot of 'cop' shows such as Monk and Psyche are quite bright and comedy based but Medium has more in common with Without A Trace which is more dramatic, but with great comedy touches.

We're continuing very slowly through our trip through every Bond film. We're on Roger Moore now. I've not seen many of his. After Diamonds Are Forever though I'm glad to get to him. It was fairly rubbish all told. Flat on all points. Live and Let Die though was fiarly solid I thought. James prefers Moore to Connery and I can see where he's coming from. Moore is a lot more suave and seems to suit the role better somehow. I do quite like Sean Connery still. The only major bad thing about Live and Let Die is the awful boat chase near the end. Well, the chase itself is very good (and there are a lot of good chanses in the film) but it's slowed down by being broken up by crap policemen bits. And that goddamn awful Sheriff character, just awful.

The other thing of note that we've been doing is watching all of Madonna's music videos right from the start. The Celebration doesn't cover them all so we're watching the ones it misses out in-between the ones that are on there. I'm a bit ignorant of Madonna pre-Ray of Light so it's been a bit of an education to me. It's funny how time has a habit of just remembering the 'classics' and one of the joys of watching everything she's done is that I've become familiar with songs I've never heard of. It's so odd that there are either songs I had no idea existed ('Fever', 'Bad Girl') or videos I've never seen. Also interesting is that not all of her early stuff is as amazing as people seem to think. The Immaculate Collection is pretty solid but then there's stuff like 'True Blue' which is fairly terrible. On the whole though I'm much more of a 1998-onwards fan. Still the highlights in terms of music and video are (for me): 'Material Girl', 'Papa Don't Preach', 'Express Yourself', 'Vogue', 'Bedtime Story', 'Ray of Light', 'Don't Tell Me' and 'Hung Up'. We did the Evita and Music era last night and 'Music' still sounds incredibly weird to me. It's just such an odd song. There's loads going on, lots of weird noises and yet it just works. 'Don't Tell Me' is one of my favourite Madonna songs though. There's just something about the video, the production and the song which is utterly spot on. I think the same about 'Ray Of Light' too. Gutted that 'Nothing Really Matters' isn't on the DVD though, it's an excellent video. Also, her look from 1998-2002 is proof that she doesn't need her get her vadge out to look great. She's in her 40s at that time and she looks excellent, really classy and stylish. Put the Hard Candy away love!

I had dream last night where I bumped into Heather Small in the street and made her sing. I also dreamt that I used to live with Alan Carr in Manchester and reminiscing about with him including remembering the hilarious tale about how we were digging up the garden and found a massive pineapple there. Yes, as if I needed an reassurance that my head is not right I have the proof right there. I'm debating whether to go back the doctors actually as my 'illess' has moved on to involve back ache, pressure in my head and light-headedness. It's doing my head in!

I have joined the dark side! Yes, I have opened a twitter account. It's kind of an experiment really as I've given it a good slagging off in the past. However, I am quite enjoying it. It by no means replaces blogs or any other web 2.0 applications (and it shouldn't either, the internet is already making our attention spans shorter as it is), but it certainly makes more sense when you join it. From the outside it's impossible to navigate but if you join it's almost like having an MSN conversation with people except that you can see lots of conversations going on at the same time, as well as little thoughts. Plus, I can talk at celebrities in the vain that they might notice me. It's by no means the second coming like the Guardian bang on about though. So yeah, if anyone wants to add me then feel free. I'm magic_treehouse. Finding people to follow is a task though!

I was out Friday with people from James' work. I was feeling fine and was in good spirits and it was a great night all told. We started off at The Palace for food. Proper summer weather too. People seemed to be doing that annoying thing of 'moving on' though when we were perfectly happy with The Palace itself, plus, Revolution's drinks prices were about three times as much. Annoying. Still it was a laugh. I ended the night walking home with Vicky who'd took a chance with one of her free under-26s theatre tickets and ended up seeing a play involving a man with a massive penis chasing nymphs. At least she didn't pay for the privilege. We want to arrange tickets to go and see the Dracula ballet and Dial M for Murder. Good stuff.

We had a fairly quiet weekend. In fact, I can't remember anything we did apart from go and eat at the Museum cafe (always nice). Oh, we did watch Single White Female which, although it was a little slow to get going, was actually very good. Once it actually morphed into a thriller it was very good. I'll never look at stilettos in the same way again! Alas, there was far too much unecessary boobage for my liking.

On Monday evening we went out to Aagrah for a curry. Despite it being a little too close to my work place it was a lovely meal, I highly recommend it. I had a weird curry with lychees in it! Lovely though.

Yesterday I had my interview at Halifax library. Despite me having a useless map and going the wrong way to get there, I made it on time on account of a friendly elderly man helping me. The interview went really actually. We talked about all kinds of things; helping the elderly to learn computer skills, web 2.0, all kinds of things. There weren't any questions I couldn't answer. In fact, for some of the questions I had loads of evidence so I might have gone on a bit. It's better than the alternative. There's also the chance that the job might come out as being paid than it looks as it's under job evaluation. However, they had 80 applicants for the post and are interviewing for three days so my chances of getting it are slim whatever so I can't get my hopes up really. Especially as I've just seen what my current pay increase takes my wage up to. Over 20k! I'm only 0.8 though so I'm now on over 16K. Great stuff. I never realised that 5% would be so much. Can't get too attached to it though!

And that brings me up to date I think :D Oh, and the Frankmusik album is very good. Kind of like a better Cut Copy.

Can anyone give me some advice on MP3 players? Although my old but reliable thing has been good to me I can no longer seem to update it. I'd quite like a bigger one anyway but they seem to be so expensive, so while I'm happy to go over to the Apple darkside, especially with 120GB IPods available, the prices just seem a little high for my liking. Sadly you can't buy smaller ones new anywhere, I just want something that's biggr than my 20GB one! I'm looking to spend about £150 if possible.

In my last update I forgot to write about my exciting news. I have a job interview! Funnily, it's for the job at Halifax Central Library which I'd given up hope of hearing about, being as the closing date was well over a month ago. It's good news but it's peanuts pay. The only way I could take it would be if they offered me the higher end of the scale, and even that's £14K and I have travel costs on top. The other thing is that the York Uni job which I really want has the interview date a week after this one which could leave me in a tricky position. I have no choice but to wait and see and just take it as it comes really. It's promising either way though I guess.

We went for a nice meal last night at Tompopo. I had some kind of beef thing which was very nice. I went Vietnamese this time, very good. I was also tempted by the Vietnamese coffee which has condensed milk in it! Next time it will be mine. I think I forgot to mention that I went out for lunch with work last week too, to Little Tokyo. I do love it so. Nom nom noms all round I think.

Continuing James' streak of luck, his work were celebrating 60 years of legal aid yesterday. Not only was there cake (!) but James won the raffle too. So our house has a load of nice smellies in it. He also won the poetry competition and got a bottle of wine! I've noticed that he had bought a lottery ticket for Saturday funnily enough....

I finished my book last night. It was 'Then We Came To The End' by Joshua Ferris. It was a good read and as it's set in an office, identifying with is quite easy. Not a lot happens though, and for that reason I doubt I'll remember much about it in a year. It was interestingly written though, in that, although there's some third person perspective, it's mostly written by an anonymous office worker. They talk about 'us' as lot but never identify themselves, and yet it's not first person narrative. Very odd but it did work.

I've been a bit up-and-down this week. I do feel a little out of control, not in the sense that I'm going to snap at any moment, more that I just don't feel like I'm in control of anything. My job, home stuff, there's always stuff to do and the only stuff I do seem to have control is really boring stuff. Maybe it's because I don't have much to do. I've found a volunteering job that I could do though. It's with the West Yorkshire Playhouse so I'm a little wary because the last time I volunteered with the theatre I was there every night! However, this seems like it might just be one day a weekm and it's in the costume hire centre which sounds great. I'll have to enquire about it. There also might be sme news on the job front too. There's a reference library assistant post going in Halifax. Commuting again but right now I'm desperate. My job is killing me it's so boring and it sounds like a good chance to get into public libraries. We'll see!

Last night we went to see Alan Ayckborn's 'Bedroom Farce' at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Having been stung by the goddamn awful 'An Inspector Calls' it was nice to have our faith in theatre restored because it was absolutely wonderful. The stage was amazing, really deep and very well set up considering the play is only on for a week. And for a play that has farce in the title it was surprisingly deep and all eight characters were very well developed as well their relationships with each other. I'm still thinking about it today because there was a lot of stuff about hopes and fears among couples which was very interesting. Plus it was hilarious, was amazingly acted and had Denise Black in it. Everyone really was a winner.

Last week we went to see Star Trek which was, again, brilliant. I was really sucked in by the whole thing and I couldn't really fault it to be honest. It was funny (and had a sense of fun unlike Wolverine), had great characters and was a joy to watch really. During the week we also watched 'Night At The Museum' which I didn't have high hopes for as it's a Ben Stiller film. And I was proved right. Mind you it wasn't because of him really. It was because for a film that has animals running around it had no sense of fun. A very weak script plus an appalling 'message' made for a bit of dull film, and it shouldn't have been, it had a dinosaur in it!

Tonight we're having a housewarming party. I was a bit put out by it really because it's not been of my doing at all. It's James' friends from work which is fine, but I don't feel like I've had much control over the whole thing (contributing to the initial comment in this post) but it'll be fine I'm sure. There will be dancing tonight as well as we're going out in Leeds. I haven't been out dancing for ages so it'll be good. Trouble is that when I haven't been out for a long time I get quite self-conscious about the whole thing but wine will sort that out I'm sure. God help them if they play 'Single Ladies'.

PS - The Little Boots album is very very good.
magictreehouse: (Default)
I must update about my birthday fun. So last Saturday we headed to Tropical World which was brilliant. We got in free as we're Leeds card holders and we got the bus for free as we'd won £6 on the Eurolillions the night before! So it was a good day out in all. We had a nice lunch there which was great and the weather on the whole was really good too. It's good to see that the meerkats have got a bigger enclosure now and the reptile bit is back so we got to see some great animals. It was fairly busy though so I did get very irritated with people banging on the glass at nocturnal animals. Yeah, very big and clever.

After we'd done Tropical World we went arouns Roundhay Park which is really nice, it's just a shame it's so far out of Leeds really. And then after we'd wandered around there we headed back home for a bit. In the evening we went to Little Tokyo which is possibly my favourite restaurant ever. We got served by a great waitress who was trying to teach james how to use chopsticks, not with much success I have to say but she was very niec to him, where as I just laughed at him! I had a duck bento box which is always always amazing, and we had cocktails and I had coconut ice cream for dessert followed by a very strong coffee. James has hot chocolate with rum after and let's just say that it's a good job that he wasn't driving! I had a great day though, really nice.

On Sunday 3rd we headed to Driffield to see some of James' family. It was a good day overall. We stayed with James' grandma for most of the day and saw his cousins, auntie and uncle during the day too. James gets very annoyed with visiting his auntie and uncle and sometimes his cousins too as they never ask us about what we're doing. I can understand his frustration really and I don't even think that it's because there are loads of young kids around now either. You'd just think they'd ask us stuff as they don't see us very often. I don't even think they know that much about me really, well, not stuff they'd have heard straight from me anyway. Anyway, it was a good day. The night not so much as James wasn't very during the night. We still don't know why but it didn't make his birthday (which was the next day) worth celebrating. Poor mister man. I'd even made him nice birthday stuff too.

So yeah, bank holiday Monday wasn't all that fun as we didn't do a lot. We decided to postponed James' birthday for a week! Just as well really as I'm still waiting for one of his presents to cmoe through! I'm still waiting for some cards too (still not got yours yet Lucy) so God knows where it all it is.

In the week I got some of my presents through the very slow post. I got some Xbox360 points from my family and also a bonsai tree set which I'm really pleased with. I've planted two to see how they do and I've saved another two in case things go horribly wrong. It's a slow process but I'm really worried it'll go wrong because they're meant to be difficult to grow. Does anyone have any experience with them as I really want it to go right! We also watched my Librarian: Quest for the Sacred Spear DVD which was brilliantly fun, especially as it had Kyle Maclachlan playing an evil librarian.

Speaking of which, I've found a great job to apply for. It's Harewood Project Archive Assistant which sounds amazing. It's only for six months though and only 15k but it'd be good just to get my foot back in the door. I've been a bit frustratd with work of late, I'm just a bit frustrated that even though I've been out of uni for four years I've never been able to get of the starting block as far as wages are concerned. And I know I'm quite capable of working in a higher paid job, there are plenty of people I work with who are earning more than me and they're no better than me. I guess have risen to 17k but as I'm only working for four days a week it doesn't really count. I just want a better paid job! Is that too much to ask?

While I'm on a work note, OfSTED came this week. Only for a day but as I'm on my own I had to organise the whole thing. It went well but I was in a meeting with them, answering questions and all the time thinking 'why am I still here, I don't want to be in education anymore' so I'd better get another, better job soon.

In other crap news, we're still fighting to get our deposit back from the last house. Turns out it's been sent to our old landlords (nice of them to tell us) and they want to keep £200 of it for carpet cleaning. We need to see the emails and sort it next week so we can tell them to fuck off. It's so unfair and we've been moved out for 8 weeks anyway and we've had to do all of the chasing for it so it could get ugly.

Better stuff now. This weekend's been really nice. Yesterday we went to Leeds City art gallery which we'd never been to before. We ended up spending most of the time on the lower ground floor in the natural life bit which is really great. I ticked off another two prehistorical fossils that I'd always wanted to see off my list as they have a Hypselosaurus dinosaur egg there and a Megaloseros skeleton. The former is the biggest dinosaur egg ever discovered and the latter has the widest skull of any mammel that's ever lived. Strangely, both of these facts were absent from the displays. The reason I originally wanted to go to the museum in the first place was that they were meant to have a computer game retrospective exhibit on which sounded brilliant. However, it wasn't on. We asked about it and apparently they hadn't got enough funding for it which I was saddened by as I was really looking forward to it.

In the evening we went to the cinema to see 'In The Loop' which was very funny. I'm not a big fan of all the swearing though, not because it offends me, just because swearing in itself isn't funny at all but I did enjoy. A three out of five affair really. There's loads of stuff at the cinema we want to see. Hopefully the next week will bring Coroline and Wolverine and then Star Trek a little later when it's got quiter.

Music-wise it's electroclash week this week with new albums from Peaches and Fischerspooner (and I think Miss Kitten although I don't have it). Peaches 'I Feel Cream' is brilliant and it always amazes me that even though she work sin quite rigid template she always does something a little different, she really is a very underated gem. The new Fischerspooner album is really good too, possibly a bit more accessible than there others although that's never been a problem for me.

Due to typing up the Iceland stuff I forgot to mention that before the holiday I went for that job interview at Keighley library. It was a fairly relaxed interview and I thought that I answered the questions ok. I didn't get it though. I can only think that I lacked the experience really. I've kind of resigned myself to not getting out of my current job before I graduate in September though. Although I'd still like to get out before then. We'll see. It's a shame really as the job would be so interesting. My time will come though, it just has to.

In other news, we've finally been contacted about viewing a flat in Leeds so we'll have a look at one tomorrow. It doesn't mean we're moving by any stretch of the imagination but it'll be worth having a nosey around. We just need to do the sums to find out if it actually will be cheaper to move to Leeds, it's not a cheap place. However, I'm really resenting the daily commute at the moment and I'm so sick of giving the train companies so much of my hard earned cash. We'll see though.

I've seen a few film over the past few weeks. Firstly we watched 'Ruthless People'. I love a good 80s flick and it was quite funny overall. It was probably most notable for having Bette Middler threatening people with an electric whisk. Then there was 'Brothers of the Head' which I was entirely sure about. It was a 'fake' documentary but it wasn't overally funny. it was quite seriously done but I wasn't entirely sure of the point of it. It did have its moments. And then on Saturday we finally went to see 'Slumdog Millionaire' which I really enjoyed. However, whoever thought it was a good idea to market it as a 'feel-good' film either totally missed the point or just didn't watch it beforehand as I did not feel good afterwards. I think the only things wrong with it were what Lucy had said to me actually. While Dev Patel did have his moments, there was a bit too much of him looking gormless. I can understand why the character was often quite stunned but a bit more expression wouldn't have gone amiss. The other thing was that the whole Millionaire questions reflecting his life chronologically . Mind you, the Millionaire bit wasn't really the point so I could forgive it that. It did feel a little overlong though. The editing and the general filimg was especially good and overall I really liked it.

That's about it for now I think. We're off for quiz tonight. Hoorah!
magictreehouse: (Default)
I had an excellent weekend as Lucy came to visit us on Friday night. now I did plan on making Shepherd's pie except that I forgot the meat so that was that idea out of the window. However, I did make up for it by buying a Chinese and making a strawberry, blueberry and raspberry crumble (which I had all of the ingredients for so there!) so it turned out ok in the end. We basically just talked all evening really with the prescence of mulled wine and it was a really nice night. Subdued but then there's not that much to do in Skipton in the evening that isn't subdued really!

The next day we went for a short walk and then did some charity shopping. The shops were kind to me as I got some gingerbread glasses (not made out of gingerbread obviously). We had lunch at Bean Loved, before heading back for a cup of tea and getting Lucy to the station. So yeah, a lovely day.

In other news, I've got an interview at Keighley library. Obviously this is good although I'm not getting my hopes up. It would be amazing if I did get it (4 month contract or not) and I still love the idea of working in a public library, family history especially but we'll see. The interview is next Wednesday and I've got to do a 5 minute presentation about how I'd promote a 'Family History' day at the library and the positivies it would bring. Obviously it would get people into the library and using other resources but I'm unsure as to how one should advertise stuff like that. If anyone has any ideas I've be happy to hear them. Online research will be done at some point I think.

I've been doing some currency research today to see how far our Icelandic Krona will be getting us next weekend. It's looking good and overall, I think it'll work out about the same as the UK anyway, if not slightly cheaper. I think visiting places whose economy's collapsed is the way forward frankly. Amusingly (although not for them) some restaurants are doing 'depression' specials! Mind you, I've seen places here doing 'credit crunch' specials so it's not that different. I've been reading the guide book we have too and I'm really excited about it all. Holiday! Yay!

It's my book group tonight so I'd better hurry and finish my book. It's David Mitchell's 'Black Swan Green' which I've read before. I'm enjoying it more the second time round I have to say. It's only been a slog because the DS has sucked me in. I'm playing Final Fantasy 12: Revenant Wings at the moment and it kills my train journey, it's great!

Is it still January?! It's killing me, and this commute will be the death of me :( Mind you, it's just about getting light when I leave the house in the morning now.

I don't really have all that much to post about this week. I've vowed to not talk about work when I can so I will just say that this week has been utter hell and I really hate what I do. I need a new job. Thankfully, the wheels are in motion because I applied for a job on Monday. There a lot of things I'll need to get through to get it. It's odd though. It's at a public library in Keighley, managing a team of 8 and yet it's on the same pay grade as I'm on now (worse actually! I think it starts on £16k). It seems very bad money for what it is. The good thing is that it's in a library that specialises in archives and family history. My dream! The bad news is that it's full time so they'd need to let me off to go and study, oh, and it's temporary until June. BUT I'm optimistic regardless. I've got to get out, I've really go to.

Has anyone joined Spotify? (www.spotify.co.uk/en) I'm not one for music on the internet but when you're online it's a great way to try out new music. I've mostly been listening to Girls Aloud B-sides (I know, but the range is really good). When Napster hit at the turn of the century one of the 'plus' arguments was that it was a great way to trial music to see if you'd buy, so if you're into that it's really good. I like it anyway.

Can't you tell I'm scraping the barrel for stuff to say?! I feel like all I've done is listen to Cyndi Lauper and Kim Wilde on repeat.

Ooh, exciting stuff as this weekend Lucy is coming to visit. I'm making nice food and fully intend to get her pissed on my home made mulled wine. Mwhaha! Should be good though.

Friday lunchtime involved a trip out with fellow workmates James, Amy and Bex. We were going to go to the Cactus Lounge. Amy had suggested we do on account of it closing at the end of the week. However, when we arrived we found that it was already shut. Damn. However, we made up for it with a lovely pub lunch at The Palace (?). It was lovely, especially as the weather was oddly nice. Actually, in general, the past three (carrying on into today too by the looks of things) days have been proper summer weather and it's been nice. I didn't realise how used to the crap wetness I was. Summer might actually have arrived! Anyway, the lunch was really good and made me feel like I might have actually have made some friends here. It'll be a shame to go in a way, although I'll still be in Leeds and with good old Facebook on the case I won't be far away. I arrived back into the office to find that my boss has been given a leaving date of two weeks time. Odd but at least things are sorted now I guess. We're having an easy week as she's away all week. Deal or No Deal anyone?

James arrived back on Friday night and it was lovely to see him again. I'd missed him, even with Mr Moo as company. On Saturday morning I had a hair cut and we had a quick look around town before I headed off to Preston in the afternoon for Feef's birthday party :D I'd never been to Preston before but it doesn't seem as grim as I thought it might be! And Feef's house is really nice as is the new man. I arrived at the station to be greeted by a mermaid (Feef), a fighter pilot (Simon), a gangster (Biggie) and the WORST NINJA EVER (Rich). I had no costume so I was later made to dress up as Fiona. I will say no more on the matter except that I look fucking hot in a dress. There are photos. I fear for my life. I'm not worried though, because for everyone else dignity wasn't a priority either.

So after a few drinks and catching up (believe me, I had a lot to catch up with, and I don't mean news wise either - bunch o' drunks) we were met with the arrival of Lindsey (a diva/drag queen. Backcombed hair - Utterly amazing!) and Laura (Groucho Marx/vicar). I'd not met Laura before but she's lovely and we told Lindsey so. I get the impression that Lindsey considers herself to be quite lucky considering that by her account, 'most lesbians are awful' so yay for her! The evening ploughed on and much fun was had. A highlight was Biggie getting his cock out (and what party would be complete without it?) and Lindsey being utterly horrified by it. I have never seen somebody so disgusted by anything in my life and I'm glad I got photos of her face (but not the cock thankfully). Photos will follow. People gradually passed out leaving me and Biggie. We went to bed and talked about a range of things including bumsex, gays, Prince and music, pretty much a fitting description of my life in fact. I must also mention me being described as 'buffed up' by several party guests which i found odd because if anything I'm less healthy than I was a year ago. I think they were just muddling up 'buffed up' with simply 'buff'. Oh, and I was most amused that Lindsey's hair had still not gone down in the morning. Wonderful.

I got an fairly early train back which i was glad of in the end because I just wanted to collapse, recover and ingest something with vitamins in. I haven't been that drunk in ages and I know why. I'm still recovering today! Sad but true. I got back to find an also recovering James, as he'd been out last night too. Turns out he'd been talking to Theatre Tom for ages and carried on the conversation at our house. He hadn't clicked that we were together which is funny. I can't believe we've finally got a friend and he's moving away! Silly but not surprising!

The rest of the day was spent feeling a bit queasy and playing Lego Star Wars. So it wasn't all bad then. I'm looking forward to a quiet week I think. I've just seen another library job to apply for. I've gone for it because it ends today. It's at Leeds Uni. There are three posts going too so I'd stand a fairly ok chance of getting one. However, it's five days a week, four hours a day so I bet it'll clash with my studying. I'm still waiting for a reply about the hours of study required but I can always turn it down. Now that I've seen that there a lot of stuff coming up though I'm fairly enthusiatic about getting a library job rather than stay where I am. We'll see though.

Oh, and we watched 'Heroes' at the weekend. It's good isn't it? Naturally my favourite is the Japanese man. I love the fact that it's like a comic movie but it's on TV and it seems deadly serious. It's quite nice to see that on top of the much-loved cartoonishness of the X-Men and other superhero films.

The weekend went by in a relaxing way really and I didn’t get up to that much. Any trips out were put on hold on account of the crappy weather and we hardly left the house all weekend. The sleet was so bad on Friday night that James picked me up from the station. The exception to not leaving the house was Saturday night as me and James went to Sam Houstan’s  for tea. James had been a bit low over the weekend too so I paid for tea. I had ‘Mess ‘o Ribs’ and I have to say that it was a accurate nickname. Tasty as they were, the hassle makes me want to stick to their really tasty burgers from now on. However, the knickerbocker glory I had was really tasty so no complaints there. It’s funny, we’ve been there three times in total and we get sat in the same place every time. It’s so good having all of this tasty food round the corner from your house.

Saturday night also featured Harry Hill’s TV Burp. Brilliant as always except that this week it had the ‘Reggae reggae sauce’ man from Dragon’s Den on it, and Harry Hill dressed as a giant burger. Honestly, things don’t get much better than that. After we got back from eating we started to watch the first season of ‘Life on Mars’ because I hadn’t seen it and the new series is on this week. I liked it though. We also watched Primeval which was really good, although anything with a dinosaur in it is going to win me over. Speaking of which, I got my new dinosaur encyclopaedia which I’ll have to flick through. It’s really difficult finding a decent dinosaur book that’s not aimed at kids and I can’t seem to find any decent websites on them weirdly. I just need to update my childhood knowledge though really, it’s long out of date.

Do you ever feel like you took completely the wrong degree? I mean, everything I really want to do such as palaeontology, zoology, hell even acting (which I suspect I’m crap at but my new found love of plays make me really want to try it), I can’t do! The first two are also down to circumstance, anything in those fields only takes place in certain places. Which are few and far between where I happen to live. I keep thinking about what Chantal was saying a few weeks back. If I want to further myself in this job then I’m looking at management, and hell, I really don’t like my job enough to do that, so what do I do?!

Anyway, enough rambling. The brief mention of work reminds me, I’m in the new staff newsletter! And impressively, the bit about me and where I’ve come from is the biggest paragraph in it, apart from the Principle’s! this does mean that everyone knows my entire history though :s

I must mention that I’ve been flying through graphic novels of late and I’ve nearly finished all of the ones I’ve got and I’ve bought so much stuff of late that I can’t buy any more! I’ve just finished ‘Jar of Fools’ which is really, really good, although it’d really benefit from me not reading through it so quickly (the problem with graphic novels in general) because the story so coincidental and deep. I’ll definitely read it again though. I’m on Adrian Tomine now.

On Sunday I did some cooking. I couldn’t be bothered to get new ingredients so I made something out of what I already had in. Impressively, the new cookbook I bought delivered, giving me instructions on how to make mango tea bread. It turned out great and is really tasty, even if I do say so myself.

Last night I finished off my latest origami project too. I’d bought an underwater scene from the toy shop in Skipton the first weekend of being here and so I’ve been doing that. Impressively, all the fish and creatures are really easy to do and I’ve made one of each, now I just need to make some baby ones and it’s complete. It’s now sitting on the windowsill. I got a dinosaur origami book the other day too but they look really advanced! I will try one soon though.
